About West End

By now you may have decided you want to become a divemaster and are trying to decide where to take the course. Or maybe you are still undecided and are looking at the different locations available.

So why West End?

There are plenty of beautiful locations on Roatan, but none are able to offer the social scene that West End is so well known for. You are going to be working hard so you want to be able to relax and hang out with the many friends you are going to make in the evenings. West End is the heart and soul of the social scene on Roatan. It is here that you will find nearly all the bars, restaurants and night life the island has to offer. Part of being a divemaster is the social life after the work is done, so West End really is the perfect location.

Food & Drink

There are over 15 restaurants in West End. The choice of food is endless— from baleada stands where you can eat for about $1, to burgers, thai food, island food, rotiserie chicken, BBQ food, fresh fish and shrimp— the list goes on! We even have what is supposed to be the only Indian restaurant in Central America in West End and trust us, its good! Popular restaurants include Tong's, Le Bistro, the Aregntinian Grill, Mavis & Dixies', and Lighthouse Restauarant. Many of the restaurants play live music several nights a week.

Following a spectacular sunset, West End's night life comes alive. Grab a cold on with us at The Wet Spot, Reef Gliders' in-house bar, as we party the night away Roatan-style. Sundowners Beach Bar, located right on Half Moon Bay beach, is where much the dive community like to hang out in the early hours. After it closes, the crowd heads down to the Purple Turtle and then later to NOVA. For the real party animals amongst you there is always the option of going to Flowers Bay or Coxen Hole after midnight to one of the island clubs.

Supermarkets

There are three small stores in West End that are useful fo buying essentials, cheese, milk, tinned goods etc. These are Woodys, Jacksons and Coconut Tree Store. For vegetables the best options are the "veggie trucks" which can be found all around West End. These trucks are usually loaded with fruit and vegetables. There is also a "shimp truck" which sells shrimp, crab, fish and lobster. For a better range of goods you need to go to one of the lage supermarkets in Coxen Hole.

Beaches

Half Moon Bay is right in the middle of West End so you are never more than a couple of minutes from Half Moon Bay Beacha beach and good snorkelling. A 5 minute water taxi ride takes you to West Bay Beach, probably one of the nicest beaches on the island. West Bay is more of a resort environment than West End so watch out on cruise ship days— the beach can get pretty busy!

The water taxis charge L.50 (just over $2) per person to run people between West End and West Bay Beach.

Diving

Obviously you are here for the diving so what does West End have to offer? Well, it had the first fully active Marine Park in the Bay Islands which means that there are over 40 dive sites with moorings within a 15 minunte boat trip of the dive center.

The best sites within the Marine Park are Spooky Channel, El Aguila wreck, West End Wall, Pablo’s, Texas and Deep Seaquest. If you want to learn more about the diving within the Marine Park then vist the Reef Gliders main website
